Marion S Hallock Award

The Marion S. Hallock Award was established in 1981 by the Board of Education. This award honors the memory of Mrs. Hallock who was the principal of Bloomfield Elementary School for 23 years and honors district employees who touch the lives of our students in special ways.

Any school employee may be nominated to receive this honor--teachers, bus drivers, teaching assistants, secretaries, cafeteria personnel, custodians, administrators, or other employees.
Any resident including parents, grandparents, students, etc., or employee of the district may make a nomination.
All nominations should state the reason(s) for the candidate to receive the award – you are asked to make only one nomination. You may sign your name if you would like. Please provide as much detail as possible in your nomination.
The only criterion for the nomination is that the person named goes beyond the call of duty, is an exceptional friend to or an outstanding model for students, or excels at getting along with others. The nominee must be “someone who goes the extra mile,” someone extra special.

A committee of previous recipients, community members, and Board members will review the nominations and select this year’s recipient(s).

The person(s) selected to receive the award will be announced at graduation and will receive a unique work of art created especially by Bloomfield students.

I am Jim Spellman vice president of the Board of Education. I'd like to share some information on the Marion S. Hallock Award. An award given each year by the Board of Education to outstanding Bloomfield Central School District employees.  Before we get into the specifics of the award let's hear  Mrs. Hallock's story.  My name is Pat Crowley. For most of my life I attended Elementary School in Bloomfield and my first grade teacher was none other than Marion Sans Hallock.  So I'm very pleased to be here today to talk about that woman Marian.  After she was a first grade teacher for many years here in Bloomfield, she became the elementary supervisor position which morphed into a building principal of the elementary school.  She was a very dedicated educator and she was a very active member of the community as well.  I think people describe Marion as being tough but at the same time she was very fair in her handling of  staff and of the children.  The board of education at the time that created this award recognized as somebody that gave back to the school above and beyond just the salary.

One of the responsibilities of a board vice president is handling the Marion S. Hallock award each year since 1981. This has been a big priority for the board. It recognizes excellence in our Bloomfield School System. Nominations can be made by students, parents, grandparents,  community members or fellow District employees. You can find the nomination form on the board of education tab on  our website or the district's annual budget brochure. Past recipients are eligible for this honor again after five years have passed.  Nominations are reviewed by a committee comprised of community members, past recipients, and Board of Education members. The committee selects up to two recipients each year the recipients are announced the graduation and awarded with a piece of student created artwork. Let's hear from one of our student artists.  I am in 11th grade and last year I made a painting for the Marian Hallock Award.  It was a silk painting of a fish and there was like a hook coming down from the side it was like I'll blues and greens and yellow.  We didn't do a lot of silk paintings before. They're kind of stressful because if you make a mistake then it's kind of hard to fix but it was fun to make so that made it stand out a lot. If you know of a current BCS employee who goes beyond the call of duty, is an exceptional friend of students, an outstanding role model for them, or excels at getting along with others please consider nominating them for the Marion S. Hallock Award.
