This year’s Manufacturing class at the Middle/High School is learning just how fun 3-D printing can be. Last year, the department received a Bambu Lab 3-D printer, a versatile and high-quality desktop printer that students can use easily.
Printers like Bambu are “becoming more popular in schools because of the quality and affordability," said Manufacturing Teacher Mr. Eric Hart. “They are more like what a company might use for a product they’re making.”
The tech department previously had a 3-D printer, but it had limited functionality and became outdated. The new printer gives students a taste of what it might be like to work at a manufacturing company.
“The Bambu is more like what a company might use for a product they’re making,” said Mr. Hart.
In Manufacturing class, the students have spent time learning the process of 3-D printing, from creating what they want to print on the computer before finally sending it to the printer.
Students can find templates, which they can customize to fit their ideas, or take a more complex approach, using their own original designs.
“It’s less making something out of nothing and more taking a program and making modifications,” said Mr. Hart.
The students, who are all juniors, have enjoyed learning the process and printing things like nightlights, keytags, and fidgets. The new process is fast, they said, and can use a bunch of colors to create truly unique objects.
