Bloomfield Students Power Up in Diesel Tech

In a recent Board of Education meeting at Bloomfield Central School District, seniors Kyler Mohr and Nicolas Cologgi presented on their experience at FLTCC. Both are currently enrolled in the Diesel Technology/Heavy Equipment Repair and Operation (H.E.R.O.) program where they are learning how to drive and fix heavy equipment.

“My whole life I have been around the field of construction and liked the idea of operating heavy equipment,” said Cologgi, whose interest extends to the Diesel/H.E.R.O. program’s skid steers, backhoes, mini excavators, dozers and forklifts.

For Mohr, the program provides hands-on experience in learning how engines work and what goes into fueling an engine so it runs. Last year, students in the program had the chance to take apart small diesel engines and reassemble them with the correct torquing, which was right up Mohr’s alley.

The program has helped both students grow in skills and knowledge. They have had the opportunity to meet and work with new people who share their goals and interests, as well as gain skills in welding, diagnostics, and other technical skills.

As for the future, Cologgi plans to go into the Heavy Operators Union as an apprentice. Thanks to his completion of the Diesel Technology/H.E.R.O. program, he will have 50 percent of his credits completed when he begins his apprenticeship.

Mohr plans to go into the Navy. “My experience in this program has helped prepare me for this role because there are common aspects [between the program and the Navy],” he said.

Mohr also credits the program with giving him the confidence to work with others on common projects and be a part of a team.

The Diesel Technology/H.E.R.O. program provides students access to diesel engines, industry connections, integration of both science and English skills, as well as industry training certifications for their future careers.
